Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device consisting of a shield blazoned: Sable, fretty and semé of caltraps Or, on a chief Gules an expanded compass Argent. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a tripartite Gold scroll inscribed “DESIGN BUILD DESTROY” in Red letters.
Symbolism
Scarlet and white are the colors used for Engineers. The compass symbolizes reconnaissance and intelligence. The fretty alludes to the building of roads, floating bridges, landing strips, etc., and the semé of caltraps (a weapon used in early warfare to impede the enemy) to the construction and placement of deceptive devices.
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 3 May 1967. It was rescinded on 27 December 1974.
