Description

A silver color metal and enamel device consisting of a blue lozenge, voided of red brick with silver mortar masonry, surmounted in base by a silver gauntlet holding a sword diagonally from upper left in front of a silver hammer diagonally from upper right, a red scroll bearing the inscription “EXCELLENCE” in silver letters passing in front of the lozenge at top and encircling the lozenge in base and inscribed “PROVEN IN COMBAT” in silver letters.

Symbolism

The blue lozenge or diamond symbolizes the attributes of courage, excellence and indestructibility as demonstrated by the Group during World War II and in Vietnam.  The gauntlet and sword bear out the motto “Proven In Combat” and attest to the Group’s brilliant combat and direct combat support achievements in that period and particularly in Vietnam, where the 79th Engineer Group has been the “Fighting Group.”  The hammer represents construction and with the brick and mortar scheme alludes to the cementing of combat and construction skills.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 6 June 1969.
