A Silver color metal and enamel device consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules, on a saltire Argent two vols conjoined Azure surmounted in fess by a plate charged with a fleur-de-lis of the third and fimbriated of the like.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "LES HOMMES DE LA TERRE" in Blue letters.

Symbolism

Red and white are used for Engineers.  The field and saltire, in reversed colors, were suggested by the Alabama State flag.  The saltire also is used to represent landing strips and in conjunction with the wings (the blue color alluding to the sky) refers to the nature and mission of the Battalion.  The fleur-de-lis is for combat service in France, World War II.  The motto translates to "The Men of the Earth."

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 877th Engineer Aviation Battalion on 14 March 1955.  It was redesignated for the 877th Engineer Battalion and amended to correct the motto on 17 September 1968.
